Summer Reading Quiz 1.1

Do now: Move the desks into rows facing the front.  The only items allowed on the desk are: pen, handwritten notes

Objectives:

• make interesting and exigent connections between the idea of a “single story” and the summer reading book
• use class time effective to brainstorm, draft, and edit a timed-writing assignment

Agenda:

2. Summer Reading Quiz
3. When finished, create an English 10 H subject in notability and create an “ORB” divider
4. Download the “Santiago ORB Book Club” handout to Notability from our "10 Honors: handout folder in Google Drive
5. Summarizer

HW: Read through the ORB Book club handout and select a book to read (select by Friday).

Summer Reading Prep Day:

Do now: Take out your notes on Adichie’s TED talk

Objectives:

• discuss summer reading book
• connect the message of the TED talk to summer reading book
• make interesting and exigent connections between the idea of a “single story” and the summer reading book

Agenda:

1. Do now: in table clusters, discuss your brainstorming for the summer reading quiz
2. In notability, create an English 10 Honors subject.
3. (if needed) continue introductions
4. Use class time to prepare for the summer reading quiz.  This is your time to ask clarifying questions. (IN ORDER TO USE NOTES DURING QUIZ, YOU MUST HAND WRITE THEM ON A PIECE OF PAPER.  NO FULL SENTENCES ALLOWED. IPADS WILL NOT BE USED)
5. Ticket to leave

Do now: Create a folder in google drive and name it :"First Name Last Name English 10 [class color]" Then share it with me at: tlockwoodsantiago@belmontschools.net

Objectives:

• discuss summer reading book
• actively listen to a TED Talk about the dangers of a "Single Story"
• connect the message of the TED talk to summer reading book

Agenda:

1. do now
2. Introductions!

3. Individually:

• write down 3 things that interested or surprised you about your book
• Write down something new you learned about the culture or society featured in the novel.

3. In table groups: impromptu book club! Share your findings with your group

4. TED talk "The Danger of a Single Story" | by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

5. take notes on her main points about what a single story is and why it is always incomplete. We will come back to the themes of this talk frequently throughout the year.

6. As table groups, discuss prompts

7. Write down:

• 1) What “single story” did you first have about your summer reading book’s culture/setting/society/people before you began reading this summer?
• 2) How did this change as you read? How did the book challenge your single story of this culture?  

8. Brainstorm for these two questions in preparation for the Summer Reading quiz Tuesday.
